week5 : Julius caser After eliminating his rivals in a civil war, general and politician Gaius Julius Caesar began serving as dictator of Rome in 49 BCE. He established several political reforms before getting stabbed to death on the Ides of March in 44 BCE. This sparked another civil war that doomed the Roman Republic to mutate into an empire with Caesar's adopted heir Octavian at the helm.
